The population was 12,189 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 816 from 2001.[1]
Glendene is known for its close-knit, laid back, suburban feel. Located at the heart of it, is a mini complex called Glendene Village, which sports a video store, a pharmacy, a cake shop, a bakery, a hair salon, and a convenience store (known in NZ english as a "dairy"). There are also two service stations, and a few fast food joints located opposite the 'Village. For social gatherings, there is the popular "Thirsty Rooster" bar as well as a christian community centre at West City church.
Glendene is named after a farm in the area owned by Percy Jones, which was later subdivided for housing.[2][3] Most of the development as a residential suburb occurred in the 1960s and 1970s.[4]
Glendene School and Tirimoana School are contributing primary (years 1-6) schools with decile ratings of 3 and 6, and rolls of 151[5] and 554[6] respectively. Glendene School opened about 1965 and Tirimoana School opened in 1969.[7]

All these schools are coeducational.
