Glendene is known for its close-knit, laid back, suburban feel. Located at the heart of it, is a mini complex called Glendene Village, which sports a video store, a pharmacy, a cake shop, a bakery, a hair salon, and a convenience store (known in NZ english as a "dairy"). There are also two service stations, and a few fast food joints located opposite the 'Village. For social gatherings, there is the popular "Thirsty Rooster" bar as well as a christian community centre at West City church.

History

Glendene is named after a farm in the area owned by Percy Jones, which was later subdivided for housing.[2][3] Most of the development as a residential suburb occurred in the 1960s and 1970s.[4]
